The other day my 5 year old daughter was beta testing Pancakes!!! for me when she suddenly became inspired to draw the game screen. So she took pen to paper and began drawing. This is the result:

Can you tell which one is the drawing and which one is the screen capture?

As we (Flowerpot Games) gets closer to the release of “Pancakes!!!”, we find ourselves more and more involved in Marketing. The problem, as always, is getting the word out. You can send emails to every game review and blogging site on the web but unless you provide a Media Kit you stand little chance of getting attention, especially if you are an unknown indie peddling unproven titles.

Read more of Fish’s post on AltDevBlogADay – Media Kits. Plus, sneak peek some screens from FPG’s upcoming Android game ‘Pancakes!!!’.

Have no fear … while great, pancakes aren’t replacing my love of cookies. :)

The pancakes I’m referring to here aren’t the delicious buttermilk kind, but the brainchild of Fish and the latest project being worked on here at Flowerpot Games.

“Pancakes!!!” is a simple game for Android devices where pancakes and pancake toppings fall from the top of the screen and the player must catch them to fill a customer’s order.

The player earns points for filling the order without catching excess toppings, by catching toppings in a specific order (like poker : 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind, one of each in a row), and by avoiding any burnt pancakes.

The coding is moving along and is on schedule. Plus we’ve hired a terrific artist to handle all the artwork. Once we get a good portion of the art in the game, we’ll probably hire a musician to do the music and sound effects.

Pancakes!!! is currently in closed alpha testing but we have a tentative date of August 30th for open beta.

That’s about all the news we have for you on this right now … but while Fish is busy coding, let me give you a sneak peek at the main screen .. :)

Dealing with updates

So … I started this morning all set to write a quick entry to talk a little about Yesterday’s update to Flower Battles and wound up reconfiguring FPG’s SVN repository and installing an update to WordPress on two sites. All that is finally done and I’m just getting to writing this update :)

You see, when we originally set up our SVN server, we created one repository and have been using it for version control for all our projects as well as the web sites. We eventually realized it wasn’t the best setup and it would be better to have separate repos for different things and I’ve been meaning to split some things out for awhile now, but there never seemed to be enough time.

Anyway, this morning I logged into the admin portion of the FPG web site to post a little more info about Flower Battles and the new quest system (you can read the change notes here) when WordPress informed me that version 3.2 was ready and waiting to be installed.

Not 5 minutes in and already sidetracked, I decided (for better or worse) now was a good time to split out the web site data from the main repo. So I pull up web sites explaining how and what problems others have encountered and spent an hour or two reading up and getting familiar with what needed to be done. Fairly confident, I make backups of everything I can (because I’ve learned the hard way that without backups, something will go wrong) and start issuing commands.

It took way longer than anticipated, partially do to the size of the repo and also cuz I’m an idiot and misread one of the commands (I eventually figured out what I did wrong, but time was already wasted). Fast forward 6 hours later and the task is done.

Now it was time to do the WordPress update that prompted the 7+ hour tangent. Thankfully it went smoothly. Only one minor hiccup, but I easily got past it.

And that brings us to the present (well, it’s my present .. it’s your past :) ) and I’m writing the update that I set out to write this morning.

Flower Battles has been updated!

  • New Sprouts!
  • A brand-spankin-new Quest system (themed encounters with fixed ability flowers)!
  • A new Adventure (which is also the trigger for the first quest)!
  • Plus some bugs were squashed!

If you haven’t already … head on over to FlowerBattles.com and join in the fun! :)
