TWS – How To Decimate People And Make Enemies

oh yeah

oh yeah

Well, there has been some talk this column should be renamed ‘The Occasional Shizz’ instead of ‘The Weekly Shizz’. I can’t say it’s not accurate as of late :)

Anyway, I’m back in the blogging groove with a couple new mechanics to discuss!

This week’s topic: How To Decimate People And Make Enemies! (also known as PvP)

I love PvP. I usually roll with PvP on in every MMO I’ve ever played. I like how your have to stay alert at all times while doing your mundane quests and farming. It makes the game a unique, challenging experience, and I think a game without it would be empty.

Categories of PvP

In our current revision, we are looking at several different categories or PvP types…

PvE
This is the default Player vs. Environment. No player vs. player combat is allowed. Only NPCs can be attacked.

Group vs. Group
This encompasses ‘duels’ on different levels. Either 1on1, Alliance vs. Alliance or Raid vs. Raid. Players outside the group of the specified level cannot join the fight.

Guild War
Guild vs. Guild combat can take place. Players outside the involved guilds cannot join the fight.

FvF
Faction vs. Faction combat can take place. If a player has better than neutral standing with a faction and the other player having FvF or PvP enabled is hated by this faction, aggressive actions are allowed. As PvP can incur faction penalties on the winner and there are some grey areas, players which do have a friendly stance with a faction the attacker is friendly as well and which do care about player kills will be marked differently from plain enemies.

PvP
Full Player vs. Player combat can take place. Players that don’t have PvP as their setting or have FvF but are liked by the same factions can’t join the fight nor be attacked.

The Mechanics of PvP

As a mechanic, PvP is something the player controls. The settings will be able to be changed in a drop-down menu, but there will of course be time constraints on how often you can change the settings. Some other PvP activities we are looking into include Group Fights, Organized Group Fights, Guild Wars (ie.. declaring war on another guild :D ), how assisting a player engaged in PvP combat works, and PvP areas (such as contested towns or road crossings)

What do you want out of PvP?

Should there be some sort of automated record keeping?
Any other scenarios we should consider?
We would love to hear about it! Sound off people!

Go here for some example scenarios of PvP in SoN and to continue the discussion.
